EASTSIDE : Latino Unity Is Goal of Conference
The Latino Unity Forum has invited organizations from throughout the county to form a Latino Federation at a Saturday conference at Cal State Los Angeles.
The Unity Forum was formed after the 1992 riots by local activists who believed attention and resources would not be delivered to the Eastside because few riot-related incidents were reported there. They argued that local unemployment and poverty should not be overlooked in the effort to assist riot-torn neighborhoods.
Since that summer, forum members have met with organizations representing Latino interests from throughout the county to coordinate efforts and improve communication, said coordinator Hector Perez-Pacheco.
Representatives from the Jewish Federation of Southern California, Chicano Federation in San Diego and the Hispanic Federation in New York will describe their organizations’ goals to help the groups decide what they want from their own federation, Perez-Pacheco said.
“Two years ago, it was the groups and organizations from the East L.A. area and some from Pico-Union who met, but now we’ve got people from Pomona, the San Fernando Valley, the San Gabriel Valley. And out of this conference, a federation will be formed,” he said.
The 9 a.m.-to-3 p.m. meeting is at the Student Union. Cal State LA is at 5151 State University Drive.
