The State Land and Water Conservation Fund Program has approved a $61,000 grant for a picnic area in San Fernando’s Las Palmas Park.

The picnic area is part of a larger park improvement program that includes the addition of baseball and soccer fields, restrooms, landscaping and irrigation, said Rollie Wright, interim director for the San Fernando Recreation and Community Services Department.

San Fernando officials have been trying to solicit money from state and federal agencies to pay for the improvements, which are expected to cost about $400,000, Wright said.

In addition to the Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, the park has received an $88,000 park bond from the California Department of Parks and Recreation, $120,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds, and officials have applied for a Proposition A grant, Wright said.

The park has become increasingly popular in recent years, attracting seniors, families and church groups.
