Registered nurses at the City of Hope National Medical Center have voted to ratify a three-year contract after having gone nine months without one.
In a bitter two-week strike in June, about 80% of the Duarte hospital’s 430 nurses walked off the job after contract negotiations collapsed. The strike was the first in the hospital’s 80-year history.
The new contract is virtually the same one that was offered before the strike, hospital officials said.
But nurses felt pressured to accept the contract because of the hospital’s shaky employment future, which led to the layoffs of 40 nurses and 20 other employees this month, said Pat McCarthy, a spokeswoman for the California Nurses Assn.
Under the three-year contract, if nurses do not receive at least a 3% raise in the second year and a 4% raise in the third year, the union retains the right to reopen negotiations.
