5 New Officers Selected by Business Group

Five Long Beach residents have been installed as officers of the Black Business and Professional Assn., which helps black-business development in the Southeast area. They are Halisi K. Shauri, chairman; Oscar L. Edwards, president; Marie Armstrong, vice president; Rod Givens, treasurer, and Melody Grigsby, secretary.

Yolanda Eisenstein has been elected to a second term as president of the Long Beach Jewish Community Center. She has served on the agency’s board of directors for several years. . . . Kevin Reed, a junior at Millikan High School, and Meriut Luu, an eighth-grader at Bancroft Middle School, recently won first-place awards in the Jewish Community Center’s annual youth art show.

The Greater Long Beach Child Guidance Center named Dr. Elisa Nicholas winner of its Community and Youth Service Award. Nicholas assists children and families who are victims of violence, abuse and neglect.

Nancy Bilson and James Wysocki, who teach at Hamilton Middle School in Long Beach, have been selected as National Science Foundation Fellows. They will travel to Brown University to study new methods of teaching math and science.

Four aspiring young artists from the Southeast area have been selected to participate in the Herbert D. Ryman Living Masters Program, which is designed to introduce students to classical drawing. They are Brenda Zuniga of Whittier, Connie Chung of Cerritos, Bryan Heggie of Long Beach, and Jorge Ramos of South Gate. The program, which includes workshops and a gallery show, is named in memory of a Disney artist who worked on animated movies and the original design concept for Disneyland.
