SYLMAR : Mission College to Mark 19th Birthday

The Irish music and food might lead revelers to think that the celebration at Mission College today is in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. But actually, it’s a party for the school’s 19th birthday--a month late.

“Our real birthday is in February, but we got off track with the earthquake,” said Shari Borchetta, assistant to college President Jack Fujimoto.

The celebration program will take place at noon in the campus center on Eldridge Avenue in Sylmar and will introduce the college’s interim vice president of academic affairs, Paul McKenna.

“We’re tying it into St. Patrick’s Day,” said Neil Farren, dean of college advancement. “We’re serving corned beef and (green) cabbage, potatoes, and we’ll have Irish music.”

McKenna is replacing Victoria Richart, who accepted a position as senior director of instructional and student services for the Los Angeles Community College District.

A Glendale resident, McKenna was director of instructional programs before joining the administration.
