San Juan Capistrano : Annual Rodeo-Style Competition Today

A rodeo-style competition today and Sunday will benefit the Drug Abuse is Life Abuse program.

The 12th annual San Juan Capistrano Championship Team Penning contest starts at 8:30 a.m. today at the Creekside Equestrian Center, 28801 San Juan Creek Road.

Sunday’s contest will begin at 9 a.m.

Team penning is a rodeo-style sport that gives horse riders 90 seconds to identify and pull out three designated head of cattle from a herd of 30 and then drive them into a pen.

The San Juan Capistrano competition is sanctioned by the World Championship Team Penning Assn. and draws contestants from throughout the state.

In addition to the team penning, a Western-themed fair will be held on both days featuring game booths for children, food stands and raffles.
