SANTA PAULA : Local Leaders Invited to School Science Fair

As in many other school districts around Ventura County, Santa Paula schools are having a science fair this month in preparation for the countywide science exhibit in April.

But the Santa Paula Elementary School District is putting a new twist on its annual science fair.

District officials have sent personal invitations to hundreds of local politicians, civic leaders and business people to attend the event, which will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Barbara Webster School.

The district’s science fair will feature about 2,000 projects from students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Sixth- through eighth-grade winners will be eligible to enter the Ventura County Science Fair on April 7 to 9 at the County Fairgrounds in Ventura.

Santa Paula Supt. David Philips said school officials see the science fair as an opportunity to get community leaders more involved in public schools.

“A large number of business leaders in our town graduated from the schools here, and they probably haven’t seen a science fair since they went to school,” Philips said.
