A Bit of History on the Name ‘Canoga Park’

Share

* All local historians are happy to see the identity of any community defended (Letters, March 13).

Winnetka was indeed founded by Charles Weeks in 1922. His concept was that the one-acre lots, if managed according to his master plan, would make make the owners totally self-sufficient. Some of the original owners are still there.

Canoga Park received its name in 1931. Many members of the town did not like the name given to it--Owensmouth--when it was founded in 1912. The name Canoga was the one given to the original goods depot established by the railroad in 1893 on the south side of Sherman Way, east of Canoga Avenue. Back then, Mr. Weeks was a young boy growing up in Winnetka, Ill.
