THOUSAND OAKS : Funds for Crossing Guards on Agenda

Share

Giving up hopes of receiving county funding, Thousand Oaks council members Tuesday will consider spending $2,820 to provide crossing guards for two elementary schools through the end of the year.

Because many students at Walnut and Madrona elementary schools live in unincorporated areas, Thousand Oaks officials last fall sought partial county reimbursement for the cost of providing crossing guards.

While they waited for a response, council members agreed to spend city funds to support crossing-guard service for six months--a period that will end March 18.

Now that county supervisors have made it clear that they will not contribute funds, the council must decide whether to continue the crossing-guard program at Wendy and Ruth drives, and Camino Manzanas and Marian Avenue.

Service through the end of the school year would cost $2,820, and several council members indicated that they would be willing to pay for it.

“The money is nominal, and public safety must be our No. 1 concern,” Mayor Elois Zeanah said.

“It’s unfortunate that the county won’t do it, but it’s still our responsibility.”
