Askia Jones scored 62 points in only 28 minutes and tied an NCAA record with 14 three-pointers Thursday night at Manhattan, Kan., sending Kansas State to a 115-77 romp over Fresno State in the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.

The Wildcats (20-12) advanced to New York to face Vanderbilt in the semifinals.

Jones broke several Big Eight records, including the 61 points scored by Oklahoma’s Wayman Tisdale in 1983. Kansas State tied an NCAA record for three-pointers in a game, making 23 of 36.

Jones scored 45 points in the second half, and his 14 three-pointers tied the NCAA record set by Dave Jamerson of Ohio in 1989. Jones attempted 18 three-point shots.

With 2:20 left, Wildcat Coach Dana Altman enjoyed a big lead, but put Jones back in the game. The Fresno State assistants raised their hands and looked to Altman, as if to ask “Why?”

Jones had already scored 57 points.

Altman looked back and said, “He’s going after a record.”

The Big Eight mark came with one minute to play, Jones dribbling behind his back and driving into the lane for a jump shot.

In the other NIT quarterfinal Thursday, Siena (24-7) was a 75-62 winner over Bradley (23-8) at Glens Falls, N.Y.
