BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Esperanza Upends No. 6 El Dorado With Two Runs in Seventh

Esperanza scored two runs in the seventh to upset sixth-ranked El Dorado, 3-2, in an Empire League baseball game Thursday at Esperanza.

The Aztecs (3-5, 1-2 in league) tied it, 2-2, on a pinch-hit single by Greg Smith with one out. Two walks loaded the bases and the winning run scored on a wild pitch by reliever Glenn Poisen with Jason Murrietta at bat and two outs.

Esperanza had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jason Webb drove in a run with a single. Scott Hild pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk for Esperanza. El Dorado scored both runs in the fourth.

In other Empire League games:

Los Alamitos 7, Cypress 4--Trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning, Los Alamitos scored five runs, three of which came on walks and one on a hit batter.

Bill Blackledge hit a home run in the sixth for the Griffins (4-4, 3-0). Miles Campbell (3-0) pitched into the seventh and gave up only three hits, but seven errors helped Cypress score four unearned runs.

Loara 8, Katella 3 (6, rain)--Jason Hossman hit a two-run home run in the first inning to lead Loara to its second league victory. Pitcher Jaret Wright hit his fourth home run of the season for host Katella (5-5, 1-2).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 6, Estancia 2--The Mustangs’ Ryan Kelley gave up three hits and allowed one earned run. He struck out six and walked two.

Trabuco Hills is 6-3, 3-0; Estancia is 1-9, 1-2.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 8, Newport Harbor 5 (6, rain)--Jeff Cunningham pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing three hits the victory for host Tustin (7-3, 2-0).

Jon Lauderdale had a hit and drove in two runs and Cunningham also had a hit and drove in two runs for Tustin. Scott Sandstrom had a three-run home run in the first for Newport Harbor (2-6, 0-2).

Saddleback 7, Irvine 1--Tony Zuniga pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing one run on six hits for Saddleback (5-4-1, 1-1). Zuniga also had three hits, one RBI and scored a run. Irvine is 5-6, 1-1.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 18, Anaheim 16 (9, late Wednesday)--Valencia scored four runs in the seventh to tie it and two in the ninth to win the 4-hour 10-minute game at Glover Stadium. Luis Garcia had five hits, drove in five runs and scored four for Valencia (2-5, 2-0 in league).

Ed Rodriguez had three hits had five RBIs, including a three-run triple in the seventh to tie it, 16-16. Rodriguez had an RBI single to score Luis Garcia to put Valencia ahead, 17-16, in the ninth. Anaheim (4-5, 1-1) scored nine runs in the fourth to take a 14-3 lead.
