CAMARILLO : $400,000 Earmarked for 17 Organizations

Favoring programs that focus on the elderly, youth and low-cost housing, the Camarillo City Council plans to spend more than $400,000 in federal grant money on 17 social service providers.

Three organizations, the Ventura County Senior Nutrition Program, Foodshare and Interface Children and Family Services, had about $700 deducted from their 1994-95 requests because each had carry-over balances from last year and were not present at Wednesday’s City Council meeting to explain the balances.

But Chuck Watson, executive director of Interface Children and Family Services, said because the way the funds are distributed, the accounting paperwork had not yet “caught up” and the agency had already expended its 1993-94 allocation of $6,000.

“It’s a shame we’ve been penalized,” Watson said. “We’ve already spent the allocation. We don’t have anything to carry over.”
