PLACENTIA YORBA LINDA : School District, Union Reach Pact
The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District and the California School Employees Assn. Chapter 293 this week reached a contract agreement following two years of often bitter negotiations.
But negotiations on a new contract may be only a few months away.
An offer by the district was recently upheld in an arbitration process, but district officials conceded several points to get the union to accept the two-year pact.
The district agreed to continue paying salary “steps,” which increase employees’ salaries based on years of service, raise mileage reimbursements to 29 cents a mile, increase meal reimbursements for bus drivers and adopt the federal Family and Medical Leave Act, which provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for a variety of family-related reasons.
The contract does not include a cost-of-living increase, and it does not allow the union to reopen negotiations if the district’s financial situation improves.
Assistant Supt. Tim Van Eck said he was pleased to end the negotiation process, which included picketing by union employees. Because the contract expires at the end of this school year on June 30, the district and the union will likely start the process over again.
