Skull Being Examined by Coroner
A human skull that was discovered last weekend near Aliso Creek is being examined by the coroner’s office to determine if it is part of other bones found in the area in the past, sheriff’s officials said Friday.
Since February, 1993, passersby have discovered human bones in the area on three separate occasions. The remains found previously include what is believed to be a left thigh, a shoulder blade, a leg bone, and a foot.
“This makes it four times that someone has found human bone material,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Martini. “All the bones have been found in close proximity, but whether or not they belong to the same person, we don’t know.”
The latest discovery was made on Saturday by a boy who was riding his bike in the area north of Via Lomas.
“He went home and told his mother, she contacted us and led us back to the area,” Martini said.
Forensics tests will be conducted by the coroner’s office to try to determine the age and sex of the skull, which showed no signs of trauma, Martini said.
The Sheriff’s Department is also planning to conduct an extensive search of the area to look for more clues or any additional remains, Martini said.
