DALLAS — The U.S. national soccer team plays Bolivia today at the Cotton Bowl in the hope of finding a formula that will propel it to a successful showing in this summer’s World Cup tournament.
Since starting the year by upsetting Norway, 2-1, at Tempe, Ariz., the Americans have struggled, losing three games and tying five. Their latest effort was a 1-1 tie against South Korea two weeks ago. The United States rallied to tie Bolivia last month in Miami, 1-1, when defense was its biggest problem. The Americans and Bolivians also tied, 0-0, a year ago at Cal State Fullerton.
Bolivia, the surprise qualifier from South America, has not won a World Cup game in two appearances. It will be playing in Group C against Germany, Spain and South Korea. The U.S. team plays Switzerland, Colombia and Romania in Group A.
Today’s game also is a test of fan support for the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, one of the World Cup sites. More than 20,000 tickets have been sold for today’s game.
