COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Rally in 10th Inning to Get Past San Jose State

Cal State Fullerton needed extra innings for the second consecutive game to win. This time the Titans scored four runs in the 10th inning and went on to beat San Jose State, 7-3, in the Big West Conference opener for both teams Friday at San Jose.

Fullerton (22-6) was coming off a 13-inning, 5-4 victory over Wichita State on Wednesday. The Titans scored a run in the ninth to take a 3-2 lead but San Jose came back to tie it on a Tim Gavello’s RBI single.

Bret Hemphill put Fullerton up, 5-4, with a sacrifice fly that scored Dante Powell in the 10th. Adam Millan followed with a two-run double.

Ted Silva, who allowed the run in the ninth, pitched a scoreless 10th for the victory. Silva, a sophomore right-hander, is 3-1. Chad Rolish allowed two runs in seven innings but got no decision.

The teams meet today and Sunday at 1 p.m. San Jose State, which had a seven-game winning streak stopped, is 17-11.

In the Redlands softball tournament:

Chapman wins two of three--Susan Caton pitched pitched a two-hitter and struck out three as Chapman beat Menlo, 14-1, in a game called after three innings because of a time limit. Bernie Fancuberta had two hits on the day including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored and Lisa Simpson scored three runs, and hit a double and two singles. Chapman also beat Redlands, 3-0, and lost to Gustavus-Adolphus, 2-0.

In the Spring Fling tournament:

Southern California College 3, Lovile (Ala.) 0--Shannon Osyala pitched her fifth shutout of the season, a two-hitter with four strikeouts, for for SCC (23-5, 6-1). Amy Lewis scored two runs and Angie Vega had a RBI single in sixth for SCC. Shannon Osyala had fifth shut out, with four strikeouts.

SCC faces West Florida one semifinals today. In earlier pool play, West Florida handed SCC its only lost of the tournament, 1-0.
