A summary of selected City Hall actions last week that affect the Westside.

CITY COUNCIL

* WESTWOOD SHUTTLE--Authorized the discontinuance of the weekend DASH shuttle service in Westwood, due to low ridership. The shuttle, which ran every five minutes from the Federal Building parking lot to Westwood Village, had an average monthly ridership of 618 last year, compared to 7,566 in 1988.

* BRENTWOOD ARTS FESTIVAL--Approved the temporary street closure of the eastbound lanes of San Vicente Boulevard, between Bringham Avenue and Bundy Drive on April 23 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the annual Brentwood Arts Festival.

* DWP CATERING--Approved city controller recommendations aimed at reducing the catering costs of the Department of Water and Power in the event of an employee strike. The recommendations included developing lists of vendors with their estimated costs and checking with other city departments to see if existing catering contracts could be expanded to provide services to the DWP. City Council members expressed disdain with the DWP’s catering practices during a recent eight-day strike. The DWP reported more then $870,000 in catering costs to feed its managers and executives, who kept the department’s offices open during the strike.

HOW THEY VOTED

* SMOKING BAN STUDY--Authorized a survey to determine the economic impact of the city’s ban on smoking in restaurants and at the new Convention Center. In supporting the study, Councilman Nate Holden said some groups have rejected Los Angeles as a convention site because of the ban. Passed 8-7.

Voting yes: John Ferraro, Holden.

Voting no: Marvin Braude, Ruth Galanter, Jackie Goldberg, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Zev Yaroslavsky.
