BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Reynolds, Spiers Draw Interest

Share

The Angels, deciding they must look outside the organization for a starting second baseman, are focusing their attention on Harold Reynolds of the San Diego Padres and Bill Spiers of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi would not confirm or deny his interest in Reynolds and Spiers, but said that a trade could be consummated as early as today. The Angels, who had an organizational meeting Sunday night in which they decided to option pitcher Russ Springer to triple-A Vancouver and release reliever Lee Guetterman, remain divided whether Reynolds or Spiers would be best-suited for their needs.

With eight days remaining before opening day, Sunday was the first hint of anything going right for the Angels (4-18). They snapped their second nine-game losing streak of the spring with a 15-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners, and found a fourth starter in the process. John Dopson, who yielded nine hits and three earned runs in seven innings, was announced as the Angels’ fourth starter.

Bo Jackson guaranteed his platoon job in left field Sunday, going three for three with four RBIs, hitting a double and three-run homer. Jackson is batting .372 this spring with a team-high three homers and 13 RBIs. Instead of being used exclusively as a platoon player in left field, Rodgers said that Jackson will bat primarily against breaking-ball pitchers while Dwight Smith faces mostly fastball pitchers. . . . J.T. Snow went three for five, including a double and home run, and had three RBIs Sunday. . . . Angel starter Chuck Finley awoke with a stiff neck and is expected to miss the next two or three games. Mark Leiter, who’s vying along with Brian Anderson for the fifth starter’s job, will start today against the Mariners.
