CSUN Branch Plans Its Own Graduation

For the first time in its 20-year history, the Ventura campus of Cal State Northridge will hold its own graduation ceremony in Ventura in May.

In what university officials call a “coming of age” for the growing satellite campus, as many as 250 students will receive diplomas or teaching certificates in the May 27 ceremony.

University President Blenda J. Wilson is expected to award the degrees and deliver the commencement address.

“Our time has come,” said Joyce Kennedy, director of the Ventura campus. “It’s been 20 years. This is a major milestone in our history.”

Still, the Alessandro Drive campus has no space large enough for the ceremony. So university officials expect to use a site at Ventura College on Telegraph Road.

In the past, Ventura graduates have traveled to the Northridge campus and received their diplomas with the students there. Nearly half of the Ventura campus students are from the cities of Ventura and Oxnard, according to university statistics.

The ceremony will be open to family and friends, as well as faculty, students and alumni of the Ventura campus. Those who need additional information can call 654-4575.
