Ask Anita Wins Feature, Turkana Is Disqualified
Ask Anita was awarded first place in Thursday’s $59,475 Avigaition Handicap after 2-5 favorite Miss Turkana was disqualified for interference in the final strides at Santa Anita.
Ask Anita finished three-quarters of a length behind Miss Turkana. Tricky Princess finished third, but was moved into second.
Miss Turkana was dropped to third after the stewards ruled she came over on Tricky Princess in the deep stretch, costing Tricky Princess second place.
Ridden by Chris McCarron, Ask Anita covered 1 1/8 miles on the turf in 1:48. She carried 115 pounds and paid $15.40 and $4.60.
French-bred Tricky Princess returned $3.80. There was no show betting.
Miss Turkana, ridden by Antonio Castanon, led throughout and appeared on her way to her 10th victory in 30 starts until the interference.
Frenchman’s Cove finished last in the race, which was reduced to four starters with the late scratch of Viviana.
The victory, worth $33,975, increased Ask Anita’s career earnings to $207,950.
