Like other notable singers of her generation, such as Mary J. Blige, Peniston has been influenced by the vocal giants who precede her. Still, she’s managed to fashion a style that’s fairly unique. Peniston’s second album evokes memories of early recordings by Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan. You know right away that you’re dealing with state-of-the-art R&B.;
Her 1992 hit single “Finally” showed tough-edged promise, and this album contains moments equally appealing--from her gruff ‘n’ ready vocal riff on “Searchin’ ” to the tart, vinegary, dancehall funk of “Through Those Doors.”
Peniston’s flair for creative phrasing gives such tracks as “I’m in the Mood” and “Give What I’m Givin”’ their spunk. It’s one thing to just mouth a bunch of lyrics; in budding soul-diva fashion, Peniston really breathes life into them.
The beauty of this former beauty queen’s style lies in its ingratiating grace and command. This may be the year the world finally takes note.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
