USC : USC Offers Majors in Ethnic Studies

Share

USC has established three new majors and minors in its American Studies program, including a program in Chicano/Latino studies.

This fall, the programs will include African American and Asian American majors and minors, according to Lloyd Armstrong Jr., USC provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

The new programs follow a call by Latino students last fall to rename a campus park in honor of the late activist Cesar Chavez as well as increase the number of Latino professors and classes.

The announcement also marks plans for a multi-year initiative of arts and lectures focusing on the Latino community that include a lecture series, an exhibition at USC’s Fisher Gallery and acquisition of paintings and sculptures for the school’s permanent art collection.

About 12% of the university’s 15,000 undergraduate students are Latinos, up from 6% in 1988.
