THOUSAND OAKS : Work Under Way on New Auto Mall Sign

Share

Construction of the fiercely contested Thousand Oaks Auto Mall sign has begun with the recent installment of a support structure along the Ventura Freeway.

Sign designer Scott Bailey of Newbury Park-based Signature Signs said work on the 20-foot-tall display officially got under way three weeks ago and will be completed in June.

“This is not your average sign,” Bailey said. “There’s a lot more to it.”

The sign, which was the focus of several months of vocal debate in the City Council, is the product of a compromise between the auto mall and nearby residents.

Bailey said the stucco-and-tile structure will include five terraced planters with live plants, an irrigation system, an energy-efficient temperature and time display, and the globe logo for the auto mall.

The sign board, he said, will not be much different in size from the existing 274-square-foot brown and white sign that it replaces.

“I think when people finally see it, they will say to themselves, ‘Oh, this is not such a big deal after all,’ ” Bailey said.
