NEWPORT BEACH : Storytelling Events to Mark Library Week
The city’s library system will celebrate National Library Week later this month with a series of storytelling programs for children.
The events are designed to encourage youngsters to read more and highlight the variety of children’s books available at the libraries, said Judy Kelley, Newport Beach’s youth services manager.
“Studies show that children who are read to become readers later in life,” Kelley said. “This helps them appreciate the written word.”
Professional storyteller and puppeteer Barbara Klein will be at the Corona del Mar Branch Library at 10:30 a.m. April 19, singing and reading stories. Klein will be at the Newport Center Branch Library at 10:30 a.m. April 20. Her program is designed for preschoolers.
Storyteller and musician Merrick Rees Hamer will read from Bill Peet’s “Cowardly Clyde” and Tomie DePaola’s “Knight and the Dragon” at 1:30 p.m. April 20 at the Mariners Branch Library. He will be at the Balboa Branch Library at 3:30 p.m. April 21.
“He is very dramatic . . . very musical,” Kelley said. “He brings the children into it.” Hamer’s program is for elementary school students.
