FDA Unit Finds Calgene Tomato Is Safe to Eat: At a three-day hearing in Washington to review the Food and Drug Administration’s policies on bioengineered foods, the agency’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition called the Davis, Calif., biotechnology company’s tomato “as safe as other currently consumed tomatoes.” Calgene is still awaiting formal FDA approval to market the gene-altered tomato. The agency may introduce regulations requiring that it be notified by food companies intending to sell such products.
