Continental Airlines to Reduce Work Force: The airline said it will cut about 1,000 jobs by the end of the year as part of a plan to transform itself into a low-cost, no-frills carrier. Continental Chief Executive Robert Ferguson will announce the company-wide job cuts this week at meetings with employees. The layoffs are expected to include about 7% of the airline’s managers and 2% of its nonmanagement staff, company sources said. Some of the cuts will result from Continental’s plan announced late Tuesday to end jet service to three cities and commuter service to seven other cities in the summer.
