San Gabriel resident Frank Bermel is the first donor from the American Red Cross Blood Services Southern California Region to make 100 blood platelet donations.
The platelet donation is a two-hour process in which blood is drawn from the donor’s arm and separated to isolate the platelets. The remaining components are returned to the donor in the other arm. The platelets are used to treat leukemia and aid patients undergoing chemotherapy.
A semi-retired data processor, Bermel has been a donor since December, 1980, and donates platelets about once a month.
