NORWALK-LA MIRADA : Schools Mull Plan for Video Cameras on Buses

Share

A proposal to install video cameras to curb horseplay on buses in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District will be considered by the school board on Monday.

District staff proposes spending $12,000 to purchase four to six cameras in the district’s 46-bus fleet to discourage students from distracting the driver by hitting each other, moving around or yelling, officials said. Metal boxes for the cameras would be installed in about 30 buses, and the cameras would be moved periodically from bus to bus.

Other districts, including ABC Unified, have cut down on misbehavior on buses by installing cameras, officials said.

“The students would know there’s a box in front that (potentially) contains a camera,” said Ginger Shattuck, deputy superintendent for educational services at Norwalk-La Mirada. “They don’t want to be caught misbehaving by the camera. It really calms the buses down.”
