Health Services Chief Collins to Join Panel

Gov. Pete Wilson has named Long Beach native Thomas J. Collins to the Board of Trustees of Minority Health Professions Education Foundation, a nonprofit corporation that provides financial aid to minority and economically disadvantaged students. Collins is president and chief executive officer of Memorial Health Services in Long Beach.

Steve Polydoros of Lakewood Productions won a Diamond Award for Excellence in Community Programming from the Southern California Cable Assn. for a 13-minute video he produced on ground water in Southern California. Polydoros produced the video for the Water Replenishment District of Southern California.

Stephen A. Brunton, director of the Memorial Family Practice Residency Program at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, has been appointed treasurer of the California Academy of Family Physicians. The academy is a chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians. . . . Dr. Brian M. Cleary of Long Beach has been named chief of staff at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach. . . . Three Long Beach physicians were recently named chiefs of staff at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Douglas McConnell, a thoracic surgeon, will serve as chief of staff for Memorial Hospital. Dr. Harris Stutman, a pediatric infectious disease specialist, will head the medical staff at Memorial Miller Children’s Hospital. Dr. Paul Weber, an obstetrician and gynecologist, will lead the Memorial Women’s Hospital medical staff.

The Long Beach Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America gave Long Beach City Manager James C. Hankla its Distinguished Citizen Award for his contributions to youth and the community.

Sean Lee of Long Beach, a senior at Cal State Long Beach, won an Award of Excellence in the recent Goldstar International Design Competition sponsored by the Seoul-based electronics manufacturer. Lee helped design Cyber Zone, a video game promoting physical fitness. Fellow student Ed Mitchell of Long Beach also won an award designing a system to test blood sugar in people with diabetes.
