GRIFFITH PARK : Baby Born to Homeless Couple in Critical Condition

A baby boy born prematurely to a homeless couple living in Griffith Park remained in critical condition Wednesday.

The couple were camping in a remote canyon about three-fourths of a mile from the Griffith Observatory when the child was born in their tent Tuesdayafternoon. Shortly after the birth, the father flagged down a park patrol officer, who hiked to the camp and radioed for help.

Ranger Doug Kilpatrick was one of those who answered the call. He said he and park patrol Officer Sean Hennessey administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, then carried the infant back to their truck and drove him to Childrens Hospital, continuing to give CPR on the way.

The mother was carried out on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. She was released Wednesday, but her baby remained in the neonatal intensive care unit at Childrens Hospital.
