GOINGS ON : UCSB to Open Spring Movie Series With ‘The Fugitive’ : The thriller starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones is about a U. S. marshal’s pursuit of a doctor wrongly accused of killing his wife.

Harrison Ford and Academy Award-winner Tommy Lee Jones star in the action-adventure “The Fugitive,” playing tonight at UC Santa Barbara’s Campbell Hall. Show time is 7 p.m.

The film, which follows a U. S. marshal’s chase of a doctor wrongly accused of his wife’s slaying, opens the university’s spring movie series.

Next up: “Atlantis,” showing Friday at 7 p.m. The feature-length film, directed by Luc Besson (“La Femme Nikita” and “Subway”), takes an up-close look at life undersea. It will be shown along with the short film “Anima Mundi,” which features a musical score by composer Philip Glass.

The remainder of the series includes “The Piano” (April 18), “Baraka” (April 19), “The Remains of the Day” (April 21), “The Age of Innocence” (April 25), “Farewell My Concubine” (May 2), “Jamon, Jamon” (May 5), “Road Scholar” (May 9), “Six Degrees of Separation” (May 12) and “Cachao: Like His Rhythm There Is No Other” (May 19).

Husband-and-wife pianists Gavin Martin and Joanne Pearce Martin will lead the Bach Camerata in concert tonight at Santa Barbara’s Music Academy of the West.

The program will include Rachmaninoff’s “Suite No. 2, Opus 17,” Bach and Hess’ “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” Mendelssohn’s “Andante & Variations in B Flat, Opus 83,” Saint-Seans’ “Variations on a Theme From Beethoven, Opus 35,” Milhaud’s “Scaramouche Suite” and Lutoslawski’s “Variations on a Theme by Paganini.” The performance will begin at 8 p.m.

The concert will be repeated Friday at Ventura City Hall, also at 8 p.m.

In good company: Contemporary Music Theatre of Santa Barbara will become the newest addition to the local arts scene tonight when it officially opens its production of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical “Company.”

The show will run through April 17 at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s Fleischmann Auditorium.

“Company,” which had a 19-month Broadway run back in 1970, centers around an eligible bachelor in his mid-30s whose married friends persistently push him toward matrimony.

Mezzo-soprano Mika Shigematsu and piano accompanist Masahiro Sato will give a free concert Friday in an Esperia Foundation presentation at the Music Academy of the West.

The multi-award-winning Shigematsu is a regular guest with the San Francisco Opera and recently made her debut with the Boston Lyric Opera. Sato has a master’s of music degree in piano accompaniment from the Julliard School and is on staff there.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. (doors opening at 7:30). Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis. For information, call 969-3340.

Ojai’s Beatrice Wood will speak at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on Saturday in a celebration of her 101st birthday.

Her talk will begin at 2 p.m., followed at 3:30 by a reception for photographer Marlene Wallace, whose book “Playing Chess With the Heart” takes a look at Wood over the past 18 years. Wood’s philosophies of love, politics and life issues accompany the photos. Both events are free. Call 963-4364 for information. The museum is at 1130 State St.

The Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, with guest conductor Newton Wayland, will close out its 1993-94 season Tuesday with an 8 p.m. concert at the Lobero Theatre.

The program will include works by composer George Frideric Handel, as well as Sir William Walton’s “Facade,” with poetry by Dame Edith Sitwell as read by Ensemble Theatre actress Gretchen Evans and actor George Backman. The highly regarded Oakland Ballet will perform in Santa Barbara for the first time since 1988, with shows Tuesday and Wednesday at UCSB’s Campbell Hall.

Led by artistic director Ron Guidi, the company will present three Anna Pavlova dances (“The Fairy Doll,” “Gavotte Pavlova” and “Grand Pas de Deux”), Margaret Jenkins’ “Sightings” and William Christensen’s “Nothin’ Doin’ Bar.” The Pavlova dances were reconstructed for the troupe by UCSB dance historian Frank W. D. Ries. Performances will begin Tuesday at 8 p.m. and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. General admission is $18, $15 and $12. Call 893-3535.
