A Simi Valley accountant has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay $463,000 in restitution for embezzling money from a Thousand Oaks company, authorities said Thursday.

Richard J. Shapiro, 35, received the sentence April 1 after pleading guilty to embezzling money from his former employer, National Diagnostics Services, and its related partnerships. The plea followed a two-year investigation by the Ventura County district attorney’s office.

Shapiro, who had served as the company’s chief financial officer and vice president, is now working as chief financial officer for Radnet Management of Los Angeles, which competes for business with National Diagnostic Services, according to the district attorney’s office.

The $463,000 he was ordered to pay is in addition to $243,000 he has already paid back to the company. Shapiro, who is free on $200,000 bail, is scheduled to begin serving his prison sentence May 6.
