SIMI VALLEY : Pair Plan Appeal of Youth Club’s Site

A Simi Valley businessman who is trying to halt construction of a $3.2-million Boys & Girls club because it would block his view is taking his case to the state Supreme Court.

Lloyd Green, owns the Park Plaza office complex, and his son, attorney Matt Green, are appealing to the state after their request for an environmental impact report was rejected by a Superior Court commissioner and the state Court of Appeal.

Matt Green said he plans to file the petition Monday.

The Greens’ protests have stalled construction of a 25,000-square-foot center directly behind Park Plaza on Alamo Street and Lemon Drive at Rancho Tapo Community Park. The project was approved by the City Council in 1992.

Green said the club would destroy the ambience at Park Plaza, a three-building, three-story complex.

“We don’t want to stop this project from happening, we just don’t think it should happen right here,” Green said. “They should do it right, which means not putting up a building right next to another building.”

The Boys & Girls Club, which has 2,000 members, now rents space at a former school.

In a deal with the city and the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District, the organization made plans to build a new clubhouse that will allow it to expand its activities and serve more youngsters.
