This Strawberry Jam Seems Thin to Many Dodger Fans

Share

Let’s see, world hunger, world peace, education, homeless people, or the pressure to play a kid’s game with all of your effort for millions of dollars. I can see why Darryl Strawberry cracked under the strain of the most critical issue facing the human race today.

I think Peter O’Malley should double ticket prices and give all of the extra money to Darryl so he can play without the burden of knowing where his next paycheck will come from.

Why don’t the Dodgers cut Darryl Strawberry and invest his salary in starting a nonprofit center for teens with drug and alcohol problems?

It galls me when Strawberry’s attorney talks to the media about his client’s “stress.” From almost any seat at Dodger Stadium, a fan can turn and see both the beauty of Los Angeles and a city torn apart by violence--mostly as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. The kids that live just beyond the hills of Chavez Ravine have real stress. Darryl Strawberry has had many chances; these kids have practically none.

Lou Gehrig was sick. Heather Farr was sick. Dave Dravecky is sick. Paul Azinger is sick. Darryl Strawberry is a jerk.

Can someone explain to me why a street person with a drug problem is called a “drug addict,” while a rich, overpaid, coddled sports figure has a “substance-abuse problem?” It’s about time the media stopped using this ridiculous euphemism and called Strawberry what he is.

As usual, Darryl turned up safe and not terribly sound.

What took so long to figure out Darryl was missing? Eighty-odd games over the past two seasons is missing enough for me.

It was with sadness I noted the demise of the “Where’s Waldo” comic strip from The Times’ Sunday comics. However, my spirits were lifted with your hilarious new feature, “Where’s Darryl?” May this new comic adventure last as long as “Peanuts.”

Tim Kawakami said it right. Henry Rodriguez’s opening day “wasn’t exactly a Darryl Strawberry performance.” Instead of killing rallies by striking out, Rodriguez actually got hits and walks, keeping rallies alive. Not a Strawberry performance? Thank God.

How ironic that on Monday The Times runs an article on the Dodgers’ team psychiatrist and on Tuesday we read a statement from Strawberry’s agent saying he turned to drugs because he had no other outlet.

Darryl, I don’t feel compassion, sympathy or anger toward you. Only your loved ones have the moral right to those feelings. I couldn’t care less whether you get paid or not. That’s between you and O’Malley. I do hope you return to play baseball. Hearing 50,000 people sing, “Dar-ryl,” is one of the most chilling experiences a sports spectator can have, and when you answer it with a deep drive, it becomes special. Get well, guy.
