ARGENTIA, Canada — A government audit said the U.S. Navy has caused serious pollution in its 50 years of operations at the Argentia naval base in Newfoundland.
The audit said investigators found petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, PCBs and organic contaminants around the hazardous waste building and landfills on the base. The report added that the United States must clean it up before they shut the base Oct. 1.
The U.S. has held authority over the site since 1941 and according to the study is responsible for making the area fit for civilian use.
