LOS ANGELES : Police Chief Williams Honored by Urban League

The Los Angeles Urban League awarded Police Chief Willie L. Williams its 21st annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Award on Thursday, recognizing the chief for his “outstanding leadership as a bridge builder.”

“In a short period of time, Chief Willie Williams has made a profound impact in turning the LAPD around,” John W. Mack, president of the league, said in a statement. “He has become an outstanding bridge builder among individuals of all races and ethnic groups in the tradition of the late Whitney Young.”

Young was executive director of the National Urban League from 1961 to 1971. Previous winners of the award include former Mayor Tom Bradley, UCLA coach John Wooden, producer Quincy Jones and actor Sidney Poitier.
