HUNTINGTON BEACH : Wetlands Group Gets Portable Buildings
Despite the objections of one resident who called it a “gift to a political organization,” the Huntington Beach Union High School District trustees Tuesday night unanimously approved the sale of two old portable buildings for $1 each to a nonprofit environmental group.
The buyer is the Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy, which will use them to help care for injured coastal wildlife, such as sea birds with broken wings.
Terms of the deal are that the conservancy must move the buildings. Plans are to place them in the organization’s care area.
The conservancy owns and operates the newly restored wetlands near Pacific Coast Highway and Brookhurst Street. Many state and national officials have praised the conservancy’s efforts to preserve coastal wetlands.
Nevertheless, Leon McKinney complained to the school board on Tuesday that the sale price amounted to a gift to the group.
School officials said, however, that nobody else wanted the portables and that the nominal sale actually would save the district money.
The buildings are kept at the District Education Center, 10251 Yorktown Ave., and were used as adult classrooms.
