Retrial Ordered on Lion Country Safari-Irvine Co. Suit: A jury’s order that Irvine pay $42.6 million in damages to the operator of the now-defunct Lion Country Safari theme park was overturned. Orange County Superior Court Judge Claude M. Owens also granted a motion for a new trial in the case, which dates to 1987. United Leisure Corp., which ran the park, claims that Irvine undermined the business by blocking it from making full use of the 300 acres it leased from the company. As a result, United Leisure’s lawsuit alleges, it was forced to shut down Lion Country Safari. Brian Lysaght, a lawyer for United Leisure, said the company will appeal the order for a retrial, for which no date was set.
