Ways to Care for Fine Linens

Careful, regular laundering will keep even the oldest and most cherished linens looking fresh. So, if they have to be washed, they might as well be enjoyed and used often.

Just remember that fine and heirloom linens should be handled with more care than everyday linens. Here are some tips:

* Place small items in a lingerie bag in the washing machine.

* If there is space, hang linens to dry. If not, use low heat in a clothes dryer and remove them while they are still slightly damp.

* While the linens are still damp, iron them on the wrong side. For extra delicate fabric, press over a towel. Shiny linens, such as damasks, should be ironed on the right side to bring up the shine.

* Hang table linens over a padded hanger or bar to avoid creases. Folded linens may develop a line along the folded edges, so refold them occasionally. Or, better yet, give a party and use them before laundering and refolding.
