OXNARD : Students Focus on Their Family Life

Share

Fleeting images of family life, particularly in Latino culture, will be on display at a special children’s photo exhibit in the Oxnard Esplanade mall through Sunday.

Fifth- and sixth-grade students from Emily Ritchen School in Oxnard contributed to the photography exhibition, said Evie Ybarra-Grossfield, a teacher at the school.

The 35 photographs on display were culled from hundreds turned in by students as part of a lesson on photojournalism, Ybarra-Grossfield said. The students, many from Latino families, were asked to write about their home life, and then were given cameras to take home for a few days.

Some of the children turned in unusually good photographs, considering their amateur status, because they are uninhibited about the process, Ybarra-Grossfield said.

“They’re not thinking, ‘I can’t do this because the light is not in the right place,’ ” she said.

Photographs on display include those depicting parents cooking, a family gathering around the dinner table and a father walking out of a kitchen holding a cup of coffee, Ybarra-Grossfield said.

The exhibit is on display near the food court at the mall, 195 W. Esplanade Drive, through Sunday.
