OJAI : Tower Foes to Hold Bowling Fund-Raiser
Ojai Valley opponents of a National Weather Service radar tower at Sulphur Mountain will host a celebrity bowling party Sunday at the Ojai Valley Bowl to raise money for the fight.
The residents who oppose the tower have lost a series of legal battles in recent months aimed at forcing the federal government to move the tower.
Proceeds from Sunday’s bowling party will help pay about $11,000 in legal fees and help fund future events, said Dwier Brown, an organizer of the event.
Since the weather service erected the 98-foot-high weather-tracking system in November, homeowners have demanded its removal, saying the radar could cause health risks.
The bowling party will run from 3 to 7 p.m., with a $10 admission. Television’s Scott Bakula of “Quantum Leap” will host the party, with stars Mary Steenburgen Rickie Lee Jones and Bill Paxton among those also scheduled to attend.
Tower opponents are also planning a $50 dinner and silent art auction--to include two works donated by Ojai potter Beatrice Wood--at 6:30 p.m. May 10 at Wheeler Hot Springs, 1202 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai. For tickets, call 656-6656.
