SIMI VALLEY : Emergency Alert System Offered

Share

The Simi Valley Council on Aging is offering an emergency alert system to low-income residents over the age of 55 who spend a lot of time alone in their homes.

The devices, called Lifeline Systems, are hooked to a telephone and a mechanized cord that hangs around the user’s neck. When the wearer pushes a button attached to the cord, it triggers a call for help to Simi Valley Hospital.

Volunteers from the Council on Aging install the systems and check on them once a month to make sure that they are operating correctly, said Kathryn Oliver, senior services coordinator for the city of Simi Valley.

“It’s a wonderful program because it allows people to feel independent, but with help available when they need it,” Oliver said.

Residents who make less than $35,000 a year may qualify for free service through the council. Residents who don’t qualify for the free program can get the same service for $15 a month through Simi Valley Hospital, Oliver said.

To apply for the service, call the Simi Valley Senior Center at 526-9237.
