OXNARD : Landfill Lease Will Not Be Reconsidered

Share

Ventura County supervisors Tuesday declined to reconsider their decision to extend the lease of Bailard Landfill, saying they saw no reason to take up the issue again.

Supervisor John K. Flynn had urged his fellow board members to rethink their March 1 vote, claiming that the board failed to address all his environmental concerns on the Oxnard dump.

But Flynn’s appeal was resoundingly rejected by his colleagues.

“I know what you are saying,” Supervisor Maria E. VanderKolk told Flynn at Tuesday’s meeting. “I want to see Bailard closed, too. But I also have a responsibility to provide a place for our trash until we can find a solution.”

VanderKolk added that she believes that the county has adequately addressed the environmental impacts of continuing to use the landfill for three more years.

Nevertheless, Flynn said he will appeal the matter to state water officials on the grounds that continued use of the dump--situated above the Oxnard aquifer--could contaminate area drinking water.

“I just wanted this on the record,” he said.
