LONG BEACH : Smoking Banned on School Property

Share

The Long Beach school board has approved a ban on smoking in schools and on other district property, including cars in school parking lots.

The ban, scheduled to take effect Sept. 1, will bring the school district in line with state requirements that school campuses be smoke-free by mid-1996.

“We are simply going along with the public mood,” said board member Mary Stanton. “(The policy) is not saying you cannot smoke, it’s just saying you cannot inflict your smoke on others in the community.”

The only vote against the ban came from board member Edward M. Eveland, who likened the policy to Prohibition. “They (school employees) will smoke and they will break the law doing so,” Eveland said. “Why place them in a position of illegal activity?”

The district currently allows smoking in designated lounges.
