LOS ANGELES : Muslim, Arab Nations Urged to Pull Out of U.N.

Muslim and Arab nations should pull out of the United Nations because it failed to stem Serbian aggression in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the head of a Los Angeles-based Muslim group said Wednesday.

“The United Nations has only proven effective when taking measures against Muslims,” said Maher Hathout, a spokesman for the Muslim Public Affairs Council.

That was the rallying cry Hathout used in a letter to Muslim and Arab ambassadors in the United States. “The U.N. is a wasteful--with a very inflated budget--organization that’s proven that it is effective only to be used by major powers to punish the weak, not to maintain law and order in the world as it was supposed to be,” he told reporters.

He said the New York-based organization could have taken the same kind of action it employed when Iraq tried to annex Kuwait, “if the will was there.” The allied forces, he said, could have cut the flow of ammunition to the Serbs by interrupting their supply lines. And the United States, for its part, could have gotten the Muslim and Serb leaders together for peace talks.
