St. Vincent Gala Keeps Meals Ready

St. Vincent’s Meals-on-Wheels raised $15,000 at an April 11 benefit gala hosted by Cuisine a Roulettes with Karim and Sharif Souki, owners of the Monkey Bar. Cuisine a Roulettes is the support group for the St. Vincent program that prepares and delivers meals to some 2,000 homebound people. The event was chaired by Katherine Kilroy and Irene Weingarten.

Venice Family Clinic is grateful for the latest contribution from Frederick R. Weisman, a new Lexus that was auctioned with proceeds used to match an earlier $100,000 contribution. Ticket sales totaled $95,000 for expanded health services to those in need.

Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation/Los Angeles raised $150,000 at its annual GLAAD/LA Media Awards on March 19 at the Century Plaza. Honorees included Aaron Spelling, Harvey Fierstein and Roberta Achtenberg. Robin Williams, Lily Tomlin, Matthew Modine, Heather Locklear, Amanda Bearse and Mariel Hemingway were among the guests. Co-hosts were Stockard Channing and Bruce Davison.

Travelers Aid Society of Los Angeles received $12,000 at a luncheon and bridge party April 7 at the Wilshire Country Club. The benefit was hosted by the Irving Walker Auxiliary of the society. In addition to helping travelers in distress, Travelers Aid maintains the Teen Canteen in Hollywood, where homeless teen-agers receive food, shelter and counseling.

American Red Cross/Earthquake Relief Fund received $30,000 from the cast of “Sunset Boulevard.” The money was raised over the past several weeks through sales of autographed posters signed by Glenn Close and other members of the cast.

Los Angeles Regional Food Bank received 492 pounds of food from the Snyder Chiropractic Health Center in West Los Angeles. The center held its fifth annual Hope Day event March 22, offering free consultations, examinations and X-rays in exchange for non-perishable food.

The Serra Project, established to provide assistance to people with HIV and AIDS, raised $60,000 at its recent “A Faire of the Heart” at Pacific Design Center. In addition, two checks totaling $80,000 were presented to Serra president Sister Jane Francis Power by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and St. Joseph Health System. The gift to was a tribute to honor her achievements and her 80th birthday.

Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women received $10,000 for earthquake relief and disaster counseling from the California Community Foundation, the United Way of Los Angeles and Los Angeles Women’s Foundation.
