THOUSAND OAKS : Special Kids Day Needs Volunteers

Share

Organizers of an event that would give disabled children exclusive access to the Conejo Valley Days carnival for one morning still need more than 200 volunteers to sign up as attendants.

The program, called Special Kids Day, allows children with disabilities or special needs to visit the booths and sample the rides at the Thousand Oaks carnival site before the carnival opens to the public. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 29. The carnival opens to the public at 5 p.m.

The decade-old program has always matched the children with volunteers who accompany them throughout the day, according to Martha Desch, one of the coordinators.

Between 400 and 450 volunteers are needed for the event and, as of Wednesday, 186 had signed on to help.

“We need enough volunteers--aged 16 and up--to allow one-on-one pairing with each child,” event chairwoman Julie Inglis said.

People interested in volunteering to accompany a child should call Betty Norton at 492-2238 by April 28.
