A fire raging across the largest of the Galapagos islands has destroyed 15,000 acres of woodland and threatens to overrun a colony of 6,000 rare giant tortoises within days, Ecuadorean officials said. Jorge Ribadeneira, a navy captain at Isabela Island, said the fire, which erupted 10 days ago, may have already destroyed some rare wildlife and was moving quickly toward the tortoises. “Efforts to control the blaze are being complicated by the speed at which the fire is moving,” he said.
