The Right Location for ‘Mame’s’ Kick

Share

If “Mame” at the Glendale Alex Theater has “lost its kick” (“ ‘Mame’ Loses Its Kick in Alex Staging,” April 11), I’d like to find it and use it to kick Don Shirley right in the pants!

I was in a group of 10 the night we saw “Mame,” and it charmed the husks right off of our corn! The production left all of us smiling, humming and feeling darn good about having attended. Our sentiments must have been shared by the audience, because both the orchestra section and balconies gave the show a rousing standing ovation!

As far as Juliet Prowse’s voice, it was great for the part. None of the stars of “Mame” have been primarily singers. It’s a comedic role. And, in answer to Shirley’s comment that the story line is shallow, if someone is looking for a deep, inner meaning in an evening of theater, one does not usually look for it in musical theater. But isn’t it wonderful to leave a theater feeling happy, refreshed, smiling and humming great tunes, not having had to squirm in our seats from being assaulted with foul language and graphic sex scenes?
