A Blooming Birthday

In springtime, Little Tokyo’s fancy turns to thoughts of celebration. It is the time of year that Japanese followers of Buddhism celebrate hanamatsuri, or Flower Festival, in honor of Buddha’s birth.

Little Tokyo has been celebrating with its third annual Little Tokyo Spring Festival, a series of events held throughout April. The festival culminates Saturday and May 1 with multicultural, family-oriented events.

The Japanese American National Museum, 369 E. 1st St., will host outdoor activities and live entertainment from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and May 1. Some indoor activities, including storytelling and music, also are planned and carry a $4 admission fee.

The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, 244 S. San Pedro St., will host its 11th annual Children’s Day Celebration and Asian Pacific Arts and Crafts Faire from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Events include outdoor performances, exhibits, food and the annual Chibi-K Kids for Kids Fun Run at 7:30 a.m. May 1.

The Japanese Village Plaza shopping center at 335 E. 2nd St. will host children’s martial arts performances and other events throughout the weekend, and Centenary United Methodist Church at 300 S. Central Ave. will hold its annual Arigato Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
